Parc Olry, a neighbourhood garden

Tucked away on avenue de Strasbourg, near the hospital and Saint-Pierre church, Parc Olry is a genuine neighbourhood garden. Its tall trees, lawns and municipal greenhouses make it a nature stop cherished by Nancy families.

A long history, from leper house to bequest

The site has an old memory: from the 13th century a leper house under the protection of Saint Mary Magdalene stood here, away from the town. The present park was born much later, from a bequest made in October 1910 by Achille Olry, who owned these grounds and their buildings. The First World War delayed the project, so the garden only opened in 1924. This past gives it a double reading: a peaceful green setting whose name recalls a generous donor.

Fine trees and a pond

The park itself covers about two hectares, rising to four and a half with the greenhouses. You stroll between sunny lawns and shady corners, beneath fine specimens: plane trees, beeches, oaks, yews, chestnuts and even a maidenhair tree (the ginkgo). A pond, flower beds and areas for play and rest complete the walk. The mood is that of a lively neighbourhood garden, where joggers cross paths with grandparents out with their grandchildren.

The greenhouses that bloom the city

Parc Olry is home to Nancy's municipal greenhouses, an essential but little-known green workshop. Each year around 450,000 flowering plants are grown here to adorn the city's beds. It is here, behind the scenes, that much of Nancy's floral display is prepared, giving the city its well-groomed look. For visitors, this closeness adds to the charm: the park is not only a pleasure garden but a living link in the city's greenery.
