Grand Nancy Thermal, thermal baths in the heart of the city
One of the region's rare large spa towns, Nancy reopened its Grand Nancy Thermal complex in 2023. Behind an elegant 1913 Art Déco façade you will find spa treatments, a vast area for playful and sporty swimming, and a wellness spa: heritage, health and relaxation all in one.
A spring discovered in the early 20th century
The story begins in 1908, when drilling reveals thermal water beneath the town. Carried by the era's craze for spa culture, the baths rise from the ground and are inaugurated in 1913, in the wake of the great international exhibition of eastern France. Nancy thus acquired an amenity rare for a lowland city, blending care, hygiene and leisure. This spring, gushing at a naturally warm temperature, remains the heart of the site: more than a century later, it still feeds the treatment pools and gives the whole spa project its meaning.
A restored Art Déco gem
The original building is a manifesto of Art Déco style: a great hall, a round pool, a spring pavilion and galleries form an ensemble of great elegance. Recognising its value, the State listed it as a historic monument in 2020, protecting in particular the thermal hall and the large covered pool. The renovation completed by 2023 married this old heritage with contemporary facilities, without betraying the spirit of the place. Bathing beneath these restored vaults, in light filtered through great glass canopies, offers a singular experience, halfway between a modern pool and the bath palaces of old.
Three worlds under one roof
The renovated complex is built around three main hubs. The thermal centre welcomes patients for medically oriented treatments, notably in rheumatology, thanks to the spring water. The aquatic leisure and sports area delights families and swimmers with its indoor and outdoor pools, slides, spas and water features. Finally, the wellness area offers saunas, steam rooms and treatments for a relaxing interlude. A hotel residence rounds out the ensemble for those wishing to extend their stay. Everyone finds their formula, from the spa patient to the visitor who simply comes to swim or unwind for an afternoon.
Swimming and self-care
In practice, visitors enjoy an Olympic-style sports pool, a round pool inherited from the old establishment and, outdoors, playful areas with slides, geysers and massage jets. The water, drawn from deep underground, feeds part of the pools and gives the place its special atmosphere. For a family day out or a relaxing getaway for two, Grand Nancy Thermal offers a welcome alternative to monument visits, especially on grey days. It is wise to book or check opening times in advance, as attendance varies by day and school holidays.
