Saint-Paul Church, Provinces district in Nancy
At the heart of the Cité des Provinces, a 1960s housing estate northwest of the Nancy conurbation, stands an unusual church: Saint-Paul, with its striking triangular plan. Conceived as the spiritual landmark of the new district, it has ceased to be a place of worship and now enjoys a second life under the name "Espace Europe", devoted to culture. An endearing testimony to post-war town planning and sacred architecture.
A church for a new district
The Cité des Provinces was built in the 1960s to house a fast-growing population. As was often the case then, the new district was given its facilities: shops, a multipurpose hall and, at the heart of local life, a church. Built between 1961 and 1965 along the avenue de l'Europe, Saint-Paul was entrusted to architect Pierre Mazerand, who also designed much of the estate itself. The building was meant to be the spiritual rallying point of a brand-new residential complex, set apart from historic Nancy.
A bold triangular plan
The architecture surprises from the outset. The choir adopts an equilateral-triangle plan, an evocation of the Trinity, while the roof rests on a metal frame of triangular sections arranged like an umbrella. Far from the traditional elongated naves, the space tightens around the altar in a clean geometry, typical of the sacred experiments of France's post-war boom. It is this modern silhouette, at once sober and assertive, that earns the building the attention of lovers of 20th-century architecture.
From church to Espace Europe
The site's story turned as early as the 1970s: attendance declined and the parish had to resolve to sell the church in 1981. The local authority then acquired it, before giving it a successful conversion: in 2000, after a competition, the building reopened under the name "Espace Europe", a cultural centre hosting exhibitions and events. The transformation preserved the original volume and the legibility of the framework. The former church is therefore no longer a place of worship but a public facility whose opening follows its programme; check locally before making the trip.
